Oxbow is a long-lived Avant-Garde band out of San Francisco, California that is notable for their prolific touring and unique sound. Oxbow plays a blend of Noise Rock, Experimental Jazz and Musique Concrete (AMG), that creates caustic soundscape with constant overtones of paranoia and revulsion.

Oxbow formed in the late ’80s around vocalist Eugene Robinson, guitarist Niko Wenner, bassist Dan Adams, and drummer Greg Davis. The group debuted in 1990 with Fuckfest, followed in 1992 by King of the Jews. The menacing The Balls in the Great Meat Grinder Collection also appeared in 1992, and after 1995’s Steve Albini-produced Let Me Be a Woman Oxbow signed to the SST label for 1997’s Serenade in Red, which featured guest vocals from Marianne Faithfull. They released a split EP with the Italian band White Tornado in 1999, followed by An Evil Heat in 2002. The compilation Love That’s Last: A Wholly Hypnographic and Disturbing Work Regarding Oxbow arrived in 2006. Wenner has also played with God and Swell.

Ex Models were formed in 2000 in Brooklyn, New York by Shahin Motia, Shahyar Motia, Jake Fiedler and Mike Masiello. After releasing the Talking Heads-esque Other Mathematics in 2001, they took a brief break while members attended college. Adding a new bassist, Zach Lehrhoff of The Seconds (featuring Brian Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), they released a split 7” with the Seconds and 2003’s Zoo Psychology, a genre-bending, ring-modulated album of Devo worship. In 2004 Shahyar and Jake left, leaving Shahin and Zach to move in a new direction, influenced by Einstürzende Neubauten. 2005’s Chrome Panthers EP is indicative of their new “fundustrial noise” sound, with loops and drum samples provided by members of Oneida, specifically Kid Millions who sometimes drums with them.

Their first 2 albums were released by Neurot Recordings, the home of many respected post-metal and post-rock bands like Isis, Neurosis, and Red Sparowes. They are currently signed to The End Records for the release of their newest album "The Ruiner".

Vocalist Julie Christmas also sings for Battle of Mice. Guitarist Brendan Tobin also plays for Red Sparowes. Bassist Eric Cooper also plays for Pigs. Drummer Matthew Egan also plays for Cleanteeth.

Bellafea call Chapel Hill, North Carolina – a small college town famed mostly for its booming, influential 90s indie rock scene – home. The rich, independent music history and their subsequent Southern upbringing play obvious roles in structuring their individuality. Bellafea teems with the punk spirit of local townies Superchunk, while the trialing dissonance of Polvo shine through in their string parts. There is an earnest aggression in their music, perhaps channeled from their struggles with the vastly conservative Southeastern United States – the patriarchal, Bible-belt countryside where they grew up. There is resistance, and there is also a secular nod to their heritage and its inevitable and inspiring impact on their songwriting.

Cavalcade could be Bellafea’s “call to arms”. Recorded over two years during multiple sessions with Chapel Hill engineers Brian Paulson and Nick Petersen, focused on the ideas of plurality and layers, friends and enemies, dedication and rejection, decoding the feeling of fight. Bellafea’s urgency and battle cry is apparent; well-known for their captivating sold-out hometown performances, they have gained the loyalty of local musicians/friends John Darnielle (Mountain Goats), Dave Laney (Milemarker), Ben Davis (Sleepytime Trio, Bats & Mice), Daniel Hart (Polyphonic Spree, St. Vincent, John Vanderslice), Eric Moe (Zegota) who all – along with a choir of friends – lend a hand on their debut full-length.

Zach Hill is a musician residing in Sacramento, California. He performs/has performed in numerous Pacific Coast based groups, including Hella, Holy Smokes, Nervous Cop, and a diverse other range of groups including Team Sleep (featuring Chino Moreno of Deftones), Goon Moon, and The Ladies (a duo consisting of Zach on drums and Rob Crow of Pinback on guitar). Zach is completely self taught, having started drumming around 1995. Zach is an endorser of Tama drums, Paiste cymbals, and Pro-mark drum sticks.

One of Zach Hill’s most defining characteristics as a drummer is his footwork. Many drummers are surprised when they realize that he only uses one bass drum and a single bass drum pedal when he plays. For example, in the song Imaginary Friends from Hella’s Church Gone Wild record, Hill employs his characteristic double-stroke bass drum method throughout much of the song, leading many to believe he is using more than one foot to do so, when he is only using his right foot. Zach Hill’s set thus far had had generally very low-tuned tom-toms and floor-toms. When playing rhythms back and forth between his bass drum and these tom-toms, it often sounds as if it is all being created by the bass drum. His snare drum sound is often a contrasting highly tuned “crack” sound.

A unique aspect of Zach’s style is his liberal use of unconventional sounding cymbals, often referred to as “trash” cymbals. (last.fm)
