Viva Death

from: U.S.
genre: Indie / Post-Punk / Experimental

Viva Death brings together Scott Shiflett and Trever Keith (Face to Face), Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters), Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle), and Chad Blinman (Real Space Noise) in one unlikely, impractical, noncommercial musical experiment. Viva Death are known for using Baritone guitars rather than normal guitars to achieve their unique sound.

Viva Death's self-titled first album, quietly released on Vagrant Records in 2002, confronted listeners with a brash, aggressive onslaught of baritone guitars, drums, vocals and noises unlike anything ever heard from the members' better-known bands. The unconventional sound surprised listeners and shocked critics, but the album gradually gained a devoted following.

No one expected it could ever happen again. But against all odds, the members of Viva Death found time in their respective schedules to return to the studio for a second album. 'One Percent Panic' broadens the scope of the Viva Death sound while remaining true to its baritone guitar-driven style: Tightly-wound riffs, frenetic drums and strange noises spill into lush fields of enveloping sound, taking the listener to unexpected places while at the same time delivering the high energy Viva Death fans have come to expect.

Hot Snakes

http://www.feedthecreature.com/_images/products/posters/hotsnakes_spazzedwolf.jpg
www.myspace.com/hotsnakesband
from: California, U.S.
genre: Indie / Post-Punk / Post-Hardcore

Hot Snakes was an American post-punk/post-hardcore band led by Rick Froberg and John Reis, formed in 1999. Reis and Froberg had previously performed together in Pitchfork and Drive Like Jehu while living in San Diego, CA during their youth.

Although they share sonic similarities with bands its members had previously been involved with, Hot Snakes’ sound was much more punk-influenced than Drive Like Jehu and Pitchfork. Reis and Froberg were also heavily influenced by bands such as The Wipers, Suicide, and Michael Yonkers Band, and these influences gave Hot Snakes a distinctive sound. Their songs are much shorter and succinct than Drive Like Jehu, but retain the discordant guitars and singing that define DLJ’s best work. Hot Snakes recorded three excellent studio albums, 2000’s Automatic Midnight, 2002’s Suicide Invoice, and 2004’s Audit in Progress. The Peel Session EP (2005) and Thunder Down Under (2006) live albums both featured muscular live versions of their songs.

On 7 July 2005, Reis announced that the band would be calling it quits in a hand-written letter posted on their label’s (Swami Records) Web site. Shortly after the split-up of the Hot Snakes, a cover of Government Issue’s “Time to Escape” appeared on the soundtrack to Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland videogame. This song was the last ever recording by the Hot Snakes. While the Hot Snakes have called it a day, John Reis continues to play in The Night Marchers, and with Mario Rubalcaba in the power pop trio The Sultans and run the Swami Records label. Mario Rubalcaba also plays in the San Diego band Earthless. Gar Wood continues to record music and play in Beehive and the Barracudas. Rick Froberg currently lives in New York, playing in Obits and working as a visual artist and illustrator.

www.myspace.com/exmodels
from: Brooklyn, New York U.S.

Ex Models were formed in 2000 in Brooklyn, New York by Shahin Motia, Shahyar Motia, Jake Fiedler and Mike Masiello. After releasing the Talking Heads-esque Other Mathematics in 2001, they took a brief break while members attended college. Adding a new bassist, Zach Lehrhoff of The Seconds (featuring Brian Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), they released a split 7” with the Seconds and 2003’s Zoo Psychology, a genre-bending, ring-modulated album of Devo worship. In 2004 Shahyar and Jake left, leaving Shahin and Zach to move in a new direction, influenced by Einstürzende Neubauten. 2005’s Chrome Panthers EP is indicative of their new “fundustrial noise” sound, with loops and drum samples provided by members of Oneida, specifically Kid Millions who sometimes drums with them.

What Price, Wonderland is a 3 piece punk band originally from Stratford Upon Avon, Warwickshire. The band formed from the ages of 14 onwards under many forms and guises. They have released several small 7" records, including one under the alias "Snowman", and have some bigger records in the pipeline as of when this was written. They have been compared to bands such as Cap'n Jazz, Minutemen and Assfactor 4 amongst others. They note influences from 80s hardcore, especially the DC scene, mid 90s emo, 80s post punk and indie..

*Do not confuse them with the band from Sheffeild, "Rolo Tomassi".*

This is the debut release of a band that features both the guitarist/vocalist and the drummer of TRALUMA (Caulfield Records). Six songs full of Chicago meets D.C. post punk styled power and hooks.Blending FUGAZI styled guitar parts with SOULSIDE meets IGNITION vocals, ADMIRAL / BLUEBIRD-esque basslines, and a hint of SHELLAC styled drumming; this band is definately recommend for fans of all of the aforementioned bands.

www.myspace.com/drivelikejehu
from: San Diego, California U.S.
genre: Post Punk / Post Hardcore / Math Rock

Drive Like Jehu was an American post-punk/post-hardcore band led by Rick Froberg and John Reis, formed in 1990 in San Diego, California and disbanded in 1995. Their music combines elements of rock and punk with complex time signature changes, complicated interweaving guitar lines, unusual and extended song structures, and atonal, dissonant guitar riffs, sometimes described as noise rock, math rock or sludge rock. They released two full-length albums before disbanding in 1995, partly due to Reis' increased involvement with his other band, Rocket from the Crypt. The success of Rocket from the Crypt and of Reis and Froberg's later band Hot Snakes has drawn increased attention to their work in Drive Like Jehu and led to a re-release of their influential album Yank Crime. Posthumously, Drive Like Jehu's music has been cited as a catalyst for the re-emergence of emo and for the prolific San Diego music scene of the 1990s.

Maniquí Lazer

www.myspace.com/elmaniquilazer
from: Mexico
genre: Experimental / Electro / Punk

Hi-fi attitude compresse in lo-fi seconds twined with noisy synthetic pop winks…“Lazer punk” they call it. What Rodo (bass and keyboards), Valentín Torres (keyboards) and Jung Sing (drums and vocals) have been doing since the beginning of 2005, in the warm border city of Mexicali, Mexico, is something far beyond “simple” punk.
This young musician’s power combo, with a sinister humor and electronic hints, roughly deconstruct rock music that, until today, has grown a great legion of fans all over the country. These three mannequins breakthrough the conventional apparel, making you go wild and dance with music you’re not even supposed to dance to. Maniqui Lazer blends the heritage of Iggy Pop’s attitude on stage and the impudence of The Liars live.
Maniqui Lazer may fill the gap between the sound of The Blood Brothers, Les Georges Leningrad and XBXRX. Their debut album was produced by Mexicali’s techno favorite Ruben Tamayo a.k.a Fax (Traum, Static Discos, Rocket Racer).
That might explain why in such a short time, they’ve shared stage with bands like: Xiu Xiu, Viking Moses!, Erase Errata, The Black Lips, The Spits, XBXRX (together they toured border cities in early ‘06), Montag, The Locust (toured mexico in june ’07), Sleeping People, Crystal Castles, James Holden, The Rapture, Numbers, My Disco as well as known mexican artists like Fax, Zoe, Plastilina Mosh, Silverio, Childs, Austin TV, Insite, E.lebleu, She’s a Tease, Quiero Club, Panoptica, Niño Astronauta, Titán, Fancy Free among others.
