Tiny Hawks is an Indie Rock/Noise Rock duo out of Providence, Rhode Island. Their members are Art (guitar) & Gus (drums, double bass). They are closely related to bands out of the “Olneyville scene” which includes bands such as Lightning Bolt. Signed to Corleone Records they released their debut 8 song EP/12” Fingers Become Bridges which musically combines elements of shredder/doom/noise and lyrically resembles the poetics of earlier emocore bands such as Rites Of Spring and Sunny Day Real Estate.

The Ladies - They Mean Us (2006)

http://b2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/00648/23/12/648922132_l.jpg
Rob Crow: co-creator of San Diego's sentimental pop superstars Pinback; leader of absurdist metal outfit Goblin Cock; former leader of Thingy and Heavy Vegetable; former member of Physics; accomplished solo performer in his own right.

Zach Hill: one-half of the outlandish noise duo Hella; member of Deftones side-project Team Sleep; drummer for post-Marilyn Manson/A Perfect Circle stoner-rock combo Goon Moon; one-third of the total sensory-overload that was Nervous Cop (along with Joanna Newsom and a member of Deerhoof). When you want the sound of three drummers playing at once, but only have room for one drum kit, Zach is your man.

Rob Crow and Zach Hill are The Ladies.

Now that we all know who The Ladies are, let's get to the point: They Mean Us is one of the strongest and most unique pop records of the last several years. Produced in various locations over the last 2 years, it is a genuine testament to the magnetic chemistry of Zach Hill and Rob Crow, and a shining example of what these two guys are capable of when they are at their most inspired. More adventurous than Pinback, and more accessible than Hella, The Ladies prove to be the best of both worlds. It's even better than the ideal album you've been making up in your head for the last half decade or so.

Formed in October 2003, DST started with the motivation of participating in a DIY punk scene that it’s members grew up in. DST is influenced by much of the early 90’s emo/post-punk scene (Dischord, Gravity), as well as bands such as Orchid, Wolves, 400 Years, etc. After a handful of shows and time spent writing, the band headed to Dead Air Studios in Amherst, MA to record a 10 song, self-released demo. This release of harsh noisy punk was hand-made and distributed.

Later in 2004, the first 7”, “The Desert Bird” was recorded. This was released by Dan Madden, who subsequently joined the band on drums shortly thereafter. These four songs focused more on rhythm and dynamics than the previous demo. After the recording of “The Desert Bird”, the band ventured on their first East Coast tour with La Mi Vida Violenta, a six-person noise/dance/jazz explosion.

With the onset of Dan on drums, the band began writing material for their first full-length album, “Condition”. This time period marked one of progress and evolution for the band, and much of their songs took on new directions in structure and sound. As with their past releases, the band returned to Dead Air Studios and spent a significant time working with Will Killingsworth. Recording had become an organic experience for DST, where many songs were either completed or transformed in the studio. Horns, extra percussion, and other auxiliary instrumentation was used throughout the album. This, along with angular guitar riffs and stop-start time changes earmarked the album as being more jazzy or noise induced than previous efforts. “Condition” was released in 2005 on CD/LP by Alone Records.

The release of “Condition” set the band out on a tour with Bravo Fucking Bravo, who had also recently released their album “II” on Alone Records. In the next year, DST released two songs on a split 7” with They And The Children, whom they also toured with. The songs on this split featured Rory Hall on saxophone, who would also perform with DST live at various shows. During this time, two films featuring DST were also created. The first was a documentary about the North Shore DIY scene, titled “If You Want, You Can”. The second was a collaboration with friends in a Harvard film class. This project resulted in a short film showcasing the performances and happenings of DST as friends, and as a band.

In the first month of 2007, an evening of live performance was documented and released on a 4-way split 11”. “Live at Dead Air” consisted of songs performed for an in-studio audience of friends by DST, Ampere, Death To Tyrants, and Wasteland. This record was released by Clean Plate and limited to 330 copies.

The bands 2007 full-length, “Capital Cities” featured a more refined-sound and streamlined song structures. Elements of heavy-punk, indie rock, and layered soundscapes were present. This was released by Clean Plate. In support of the album, DST did a full US tour playing a string of shows in the south with Ampere and Daïtro. Eric Gagne, of Death To Tyrants, who had also previously played live sax at times filled in on guitar for a string of this tour.

In 2008, DST recorded two new songs for a split 7” with Sinaloa. This record was in support of a European tour, and was a split-release by Clean Plate (US) and Narshardaa (EU).

DST is currently writing new material to be released on various splits in 2009.

Tera Melos is an epic, complex, and spastic band that incorporates jazz, ambient electronics, prog-like song structure, and hardcore punk all in one to create an original math-rock like sound never heard before.

Their live shows aren’t something to miss. Gone are their old four-piece antics where they typically ran around playing like a hardcore band, hanging from ceilings, doing cartwheels. Now a three piece the focus is more on the music vs the spazz, where they will blow your minds with the speed and grace in which they play.

www.myspace.com/drivelikejehu
from: San Diego, California U.S.
genre: Post Punk / Post Hardcore / Math Rock

Drive Like Jehu was an American post-punk/post-hardcore band led by Rick Froberg and John Reis, formed in 1990 in San Diego, California and disbanded in 1995. Their music combines elements of rock and punk with complex time signature changes, complicated interweaving guitar lines, unusual and extended song structures, and atonal, dissonant guitar riffs, sometimes described as noise rock, math rock or sludge rock. They released two full-length albums before disbanding in 1995, partly due to Reis' increased involvement with his other band, Rocket from the Crypt. The success of Rocket from the Crypt and of Reis and Froberg's later band Hot Snakes has drawn increased attention to their work in Drive Like Jehu and led to a re-release of their influential album Yank Crime. Posthumously, Drive Like Jehu's music has been cited as a catalyst for the re-emergence of emo and for the prolific San Diego music scene of the 1990s.

Loom - Angler EP(2007)

Hear this band, now!!!
http://exigentrecords.bigcartel.com/account/1207/30216/300.jpg
www.myspace.com/loom801
from: Salt Lake City, Utah U.S.

Who:
A Salt Lake City, Utah based post-hardcore quintet who are known for their powerful live performance and slowly building a name for themselves with their debut EP, Angler. The band cites a long list of influences including The Casket Lottery, Bear Vs. Shark, At The Drive-In, and Minus The Bear to name a few.

How Is It?:
Angler is a very refreshing and interesting debut release and the experimentation shown throughout the album shows the band had little fear upon entering the studio. As soon as the track “Castles” begins, you realize one of the key components of the band that sets them apart from their peers: a violinist. I am not talking just accents here and there either, the violin is an integral component of the bands sound and sticks out even amongst the frenzied drumming and dizzying, angular guitar work. Before I actually listened to this record and first discovered there was a violinist, I was a bit skeptical, but it just adds more depth to the album. There is never a dull moment on Angler, as Loom is constantly bombarding the listener with their intricate guitar work, explosive percussion and emotion laden screaming and shouting. Loom occasionally will slow the pace a little allowing the listener a short respite before launching right back into their adrenaline-fueled frenzy. Angler is a great starting point for these Salt Lake City natives, and while there are a few parts that could use fine-tuning, my only chief complaint is that this release was not longer. The band is currently working on a full-length and after the talents I observed on this record, I am eagerly anticipating the results of whatever they release next. (AbsolutePunk.net)
